Here is the animal that lives the longest, and it’s not the one you think.

In the animal world, some species have an impressive life expectancy. While humans live on average between 78 and 85 years, other animals can reach several centuries. The human longevity record is held by Jeanne Louise Calment, who died at 122 years old.

Among marine animals, longevity is often extraordinary. The Seychelles giant tortoise stands out as the longest living terrestrial animal with a lifespan of up to 200 years. Currently, Jonathan, a male tortoise living on the island of Saint Helena, holds the record for the oldest land animal at 192 years old.

Factors influencing this longevity include environmental conditions and unique genetic characteristics. Marine creatures also show surprising resistance to diseases that contribute to their long existence.

An animal that can live 500 years

To discover the oldest animals, one must look underwater. Among fish, there are longevity champions such as the sturgeon, which can reach 125 years, or the Greenland shark, famous for its 270 years of life. Marine mammals are also not far behind: an orca can live up to 100 years and the bowhead whale up to two centuries.

Crustaceans also have their elders. For example, the lobster can live up to 140 years! But that’s nothing compared to shellfish. The pearl mussel sometimes reaches the respectable age of 280 years.

The absolute record goes to the ocean quahog. By examining the growth rings on its shell, it has been discovered that some live for more than five centuries! One specimen named Ming even reached the incredible age of 507 years off the coast of Iceland.
