According to the Elysée, it is important to continue efforts to form a strong political coalition that is representative of the diversity of opinions. The objective is to ensure a broad and stable majority to effectively govern the country.
A government in preparation for the summer?
Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic, organized a meeting at the Elysée on August 23 with the presidents of the parliamentary groups of the National Assembly and the Senate, as well as the party leaders represented in Parliament. The aim of these exchanges is to continue moving towards the creation of a broad and stable majority.
The Elysée emphasizes that the French expressed, during the legislative elections, their desire for change and unity. Thus, political leaders are called upon to work together to implement this will. The appointment of a Prime Minister will come after these consultations and their conclusions. More than a month after the second round of legislative elections, Emmanuel Macron has not yet announced the composition of a new government.
Meeting with the leaders of the NFP and Lucie Castets
Manuel Bompard, coordinator of La France insoumise (LFI), and Mathilde Panot, president of the LFI group in the Assembly, stated that the New Popular Front (NFP), which came out on top in the legislative elections, will meet together with Emmanuel Macron. They demand that the president respects the election results and appoints Lucie Castets, the NFP candidate, as Prime Minister.
The National Secretary of the French Communist Party, Fabien Roussel, also emphasized that the members of the NFP want Lucie Castets to participate in the meeting to demonstrate the coherence of their proposals. Emmanuel Macron’s entourage responded by stating that the president would not oppose this collective request if the political forces of the NFP deem it useful for a constructive exchange. The political forces will be received in order of importance in the Assembly, with the NFP being the first due to the size of its parliamentary group.
