Eight activists from the environmental movement Extinction Rebellion were arrested in Paris on Tuesday, July 23 for putting up stickers against the Olympics in the capital’s metro, confirmed the Paris public prosecutor’s office and a police source to franceinfo. The custody was lifted the same day.
According to information provided by a police source, these activists were apprehended on Tuesday morning at the Montparnasse-Bienvenue and Assemblée nationale stations after sticking stickers. The stickers bore messages such as “The Olympics, it’s not cool”, “Double the air traffic to France” or “Social cleansing in Paris: eviction of 12,500 people”. RATP has stated its intention to file a complaint.
On Wednesday, July 24, the Paris public prosecutor’s office informed franceinfo that the eight activists had been released from custody on the same day. “The public prosecutor’s office has retained the qualification of soiling material used for railway transport, a 4th class offense carrying a fine of 750 euros,” it said. “The procedure is therefore handed over to a public prosecutor’s officer, competent for offenses of the 1st to 4th class”.
