In March of last year, Gwenaëlle Leterme was admitted for a routine operation at the Nouvelle clinique Bordeaux Tondu. A few days after the intervention, she tragically passed away. Faced with the establishment’s silence regarding the exact circumstances of her death, her father filed a complaint against X.

The initial operation was to remove two cysts. Everything seemed to be going well until the removal of the post-operative drain. Gwenaëlle, 38 years old and a mother, quickly began to feel increasingly unwell: difficulties swallowing and breathing were reported to her loved ones through messages without her receiving the necessary help despite her repeated calls to the nurses. On the evening of March 1st, while desperately seeking help herself, she suffered a cardiac arrest.

After being placed in intensive care and undergoing a second operation for obstructions obstructing her breathing, the situation worsened when the clinic finally decided to transfer her to CHU Pellegrin. Unfortunately, Gwenaëlle passed away on March 4th in an induced coma.

The family is experiencing this tragedy with pain and incomprehension. Jean-Luc Leterme expresses his distress at the vague explanations provided by the clinic regarding the events leading to his daughter’s death:

  • No clarity on the specific timing of the drain removal.
  • Lack of transparent information about the second operation.
  • Mystery surrounding the reasons for the fatal breathing problems.

Faced with this lack of information and suspecting possibly serious medical or organizational negligence, Jean-Luc files a complaint in the hope of obtaining “the truth.” He also denounces the medical secrecy that complicates their quest for honest answers.

On their part, the clinic mentions legal constraints preventing the disclosure of detailed information but nevertheless offers a users’ committee to engage in dialogue with them – an offer that the family has refused.

CHU Pellegrin informs the Regional Health Agency (ARS) which is considering an inspection following this serious adverse event associated with the care received by Gwenaëlle.

Jean-Luc Leterme hopes that this investigation will prevent any potential similar tragedies in the future if shortcomings are confirmed in this medical facility. As a last resort, he could bring the matter to the commission dedicated to medical accidents to further their quest for justice and transparency.
