Last Wednesday, a terrible incident occurred on a terrace in Paris: a car deliberately drove into the seated customers, causing the death of one person and injuring six others. The presumed driver told authorities that he had been influenced by voices he heard, prompting him to commit such a tragic act.
The act could be intentional
The Paris prosecutor’s office stated on Thursday, July 18 that the act of the man who drove into a bar terrace near Père-Lachaise in Paris could be intentional. Thus, the accidental track is abandoned in favor of a potentially deliberate act.
Requalification as murder and attempted murder
Following the suspect’s statements during his custody, the facts have been requalified as murder and attempted murder. According to several witnesses, the car passed by the restaurant several times before accelerating and intentionally heading towards the terrace.
The suspect is 24 years old
The suspect, 24 years old and of French nationality, explained that he heard a voice that urged him to commit this act. He has been admitted to the psychiatric infirmary of the Paris police prefecture and his custody has been lifted. He has no previous criminal convictions and no passengers were present in the vehicle. The criminal brigade has been tasked with continuing the investigations.
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (Pnat) has not yet taken over the investigation and is currently assessing the situation.
